Smartglasses, such as Google Glass, are causing CIOs to take a fresh look at the impact wearable electronics will have on the enterprise. Gartner said that the use of smartglasses has the potential to improve worker efficiency in vertical markets such as manufacturing, field service, retail and healthcare. “Smartglasses with augmented reality (AR) and head-mounted cameras can increase the efficiency of technicians, engineers and other workers in field service, maintenance, healthcare and manufacturing roles,” said Angela McIntyre, Research Director at Gartner. “In the next three to five years, the industry that is likely to experience the greatest benefit from smartglasses is field service, potentially increasing profits by $1 billion annually. The greatest savings in field service will come from diagnosing and fixing problems more quickly and without needing to bring additional experts to remote sites.”

It’s been just over a year since Google’s Niantic Labs launched Ingress, an alternate and augmented reality turf war game, as a closed beta. Last Friday, the game ditched its invitation requirement, and today Niantic announced that Ingress will lose its beta tag on December 14. So, in just over a month, anyone with an Android phone can join in the search for XM and start battling for control of the world’s portals by downloading the app from Google Play.

The good news isn’t just for new players, either. Ingress agents who’ve been playing awhile can now earn the new Founder Medal badge if they reach level 5 in the game before the beta ends. Lastly, Niantic is announcing the Ingress Elite Agent challenge for all players, which starts today and runs until December 14. Players who have the best Ingress performance stats and submit "a creative social media submission" will get a free trip to California next February to work with Niantic Labs on the ever-evolving Ingress story. La Piana di Giza, dove oltre 5.000 anni fa sono sorte le piramidi di Cheope, Kefren e Micerino, oltre alla sfinge, templi e tombe di dignitari, ora è davvero accessibile a tutti. E stando a casa, dal proprio pc.
Oggi, infatti, è stato finalmente completato il grande progetto di digitalizzazione e modellazione in 3D di tutta la Piana di Giza. Un progetto enorme che coinvolge l’Università di Harvard, il Museum of Fine Arts di Boston e la francese Dassault Systèmes, un’azienda specializzata nella modellizzazione informatica.

L’ultimo tassello del colossale lavoro digitale è stato il tempio della Sfinge, totalmente digitalizzata e ricostruita. Non solo. Oltre alla Sfinge (e al suo tempio), sono stati aggiunti la tomba della Regina Meresankh, la piramide e i templi mortuari del Re Kfren.
Non si tratta di una semplice riproduzione in digitale della situazione esistente nella piana egiziana. I monumenti della necropoli sono stati ricostruiti con la realtà virtuale e portati allo stato originario immediatamente dopo il loro completamento, migliaia di anni fa.

The next-generation spectacles were revealed at a gadget fair on the outskirts of Tokyo and could be available in time for the city’s hosting of the Olympics in 2020.

By using augmented reality the glasses can project text in the wearer’s native tongue over unfamiliar signs and menus, potentially proving invaluable for British tourists whose grasp of Japanese is limited.
The invention may be particularly useful for those who journey beyond the most popular destinations in Japan where foreign-language menus are rarely found.
In a statement Japanese telecoms firm NTT Docomo, the company behind the glasses, said: "Character recognition technology enables instant language translation for users travelling abroad and reading restaurant menus and other documents."
Another function the smart glasses can perform is turning any flat surface into a touchscreen with the wearer using a finger ring to activate animated tags.

Della prossima futura immissione sul mercato di una o più varianti dei Google Glass per coloro che portano gli occhiali d vistase ne era già parlato nei mesi scorsi ma laconferma effettiva circa la possibilità di sfruttare i chiacchieratissimi occhiali per la realtà aumentata anche da coloro che non possono fare a meno delle lenti correttive è giunta soltanto nel corso degli ultimi giorni.

Jenny Murphy, attualmente a lavoro presso big G come sviluppatore del progetto Glass, ha infatti condiviso una foto su Google+ che, appunto, la ritrae mentre utilizza il dispositivo per la realtà aumentata di Google sopra una montatura tradizionale.
Si tratta della prima immagine, visualizzabile anche all’inizio di questo post, che mostra in via ufficiale un paio di Google Glass con lenti graduate e che sta ad indicare chiaramente come dopo tante indiscrezioni e dichiarazioni il progetto inerente la creazione di una variante degli occhiali per la realtà aumentata di Google si sia concretizzato.
È inoltre interessante notare come rispetto a quella classica la versione dei Google Glass per chi indossa già una montatura per lenti graduate prevede un sistema di aggancio tramite magnete e la possibilità di modificare l’inclinazione dello schermo attraverso un piccolo snodo a metà della stanghetta che regge schermo e fotocamera. Il colore, a quanto pare, sarà inoltre personalizzabile in modo tale da potersi adattare nel miglior modo possibile al tipo di montatura in uso.
Al momento, comunque, non si hanno ancora notizie certe in merito allacommercializzazione della variante dei Google Glass per occhiali da vista ma è molto probabile che segua di pari passo quella classica.
